Microsoft SharePoint is under siege from the cloud-based content management system (CMS) Box.net.
Jen Grant, VP of marketing at Box.net, recognizes three trends within the industry. First, is that all generations are becoming web savvy and want business tools that are easy to use. Another is a shift in the workplace; in the past, people would only share things within the confines of an office, but more recently people are using tools to share with a more global audience.
Lastly, there are changes in focus for IT departments, “IT is really thinking heavily around how to be more strategic and not spend all their time maintaining servers,” said Grant.
The company is working to differentiate itself from its competitors by being a total content management system for organizations.
“Take expectations you have from the traditional Microsoft paradigm and bring that to the web so you have this power of Google experience, but directly in the cloud,” said Aaron Levie, CEO of Box.net.
Because of Box.net’s ability to rapidly deploy a setup for customers, they are able to empower businesses to collaborate and share information without forcing them to expand their IT infrastructure.
Easy to use tools, with rapid deployment are making Box.net stiff competition in online file sharing.
